Camera: Red V Raptor
Lenses: Bausch and Lomb Baltars / Zero Optic Rehoused
As the director of cinematography for "Are You a Friend of Dorothy?", a poignant critique on LGBTQ rights set in the 1950s, I aimed to achieve a stylistic look that authentically reflected the era. To do this, I drew inspiration from the camera movements of 1940s mental hygiene films, capturing the essence of the period. We used re-housed Bausch and Lomb lenses, known for their unique character, which were the same lenses popular in the 1950s. The film was shot in a 4:3 aspect ratio, staying true to the format of the time. To recreate the lighting quality of classic films, we primarily relied on hot lights, which contributed to the warm, nostalgic atmosphere that complements the film’s themes.
